Malaysia says royal document granting home detention for jailed ex-PM Najib Razak not withheld

KUALA LUMPUR: A purported&nbsp, royal document&nbsp, allowing Malaysia’s jailed former Prime Minister&nbsp, Najib&nbsp, Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest was never hidden, the communications minister said on Wednesday ( Jan 8 ).

Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the state director, told a standard media briefing he was not informed or received for a document.

The house of Malaysia’s previous king, who granted&nbsp, Najib&nbsp, a reprimand and reduced statement last year before stepping down, on Jan 4 issued and afterward confirmed the authenticity of a letter saying the report existed. &nbsp, Najib’s legitimate group says the government has ignored it.

Najib’s constitutional challenge to obtain the document, which he claims may allow him to provide the rest of his time at home, was overturned on Monday by the Court of Appeal. The situation will return to court so that a different prosecutor can hear it.

Fahmi claimed that the government would leave the event of the original premier in the hands of the court system and that the government was subject to the subjudice rule.

We are aware that the High Court has turned over the case to the Court of Appeal, so we must consider the attorney-general’s opinions into account in order to avoid causing any harm, according to Fahmi.

Najib, imprisoned for his part in a multibillion-dollar scam at state finance 1Malaysia Development Berhad, had his 12-year word doubled last year in a pardon by then-King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah.

Najib&nbsp, and the ex-king’s castle say the king even grants him home incarceration in an “addendum buy” that accompanied the pardon.

Najib&nbsp, who illegally received money from a 1MDB subsidiary, was found guilty in 2020 of judicial breach of trust and energy abuse. He denies wrongdoing and is on trial for fraud in several other 1MDB-linked circumstances.
