SINGAPORE: Footballer Adam Swandi has retired from the professional game at the age of 28 because of a , heart condition, his club announced on Tuesday ( Dec 24 ).
After feeling ill, the Lion City Sailors midfielder was substituted at half-time in their SPL ( A  ) game against Tanjong Pagar United.
Although his state stabilized after receiving immediate medical attention, later tests revealed a heart condition in the form of hypertension.
The heart muscles condition known as hypertension makes it more difficult for the system to pump heart to other parts of it. It can lead to significant heart problems and, in more extreme cases, signs of heart failure.
If Adam continues to play aggressive football, the Lion City Sailors said in a media release on Tuesday that” the situation puts him at an extremely high risk of a possibly fatal cardiac occurrence.”
” As a result, the ex-Singapore global has reluctantly decided to end his decade-long professional sports job”.
Adam is not the only professional football player whose profession has been halted by an underlying medical condition.
Sergio Aguero, 33, a former player for Argentina and Manchester City, stopped playing basketball in 2021 because of a heart condition.
Swedish international Christian Eriksen collapsed on the area in a European European Championship game in 2020 after suffering a respiratory arrest.
It’s unbelievable to think that something like this may happen to me, Adam, who has played for the Singapore nationwide group 22 days, said.” Having seen what happened to people like Christian Eriksen, it’s unbelievable.
” I am acutely aware of how fortunate I am to still be alive.”
