The main opposition party in South Korea threatened on Monday ( Dec. 23 ) to launch a special counsel investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol’s unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.
Yoon was impeached on December 14 and will face a legal court hearing to decide whether to remove him. Prime Minister Han has taken over.
This month, the opposition Democratic Party approved a bill to appoint a special lawyers to investigate the liberal Yoon’s spouse over a luxury case scandal and various allegations, among others. It was approved with a majority in parliament.
If the proposed policy wasn’t approved by Tuesday, the group, which has accused Han of aiding Yoon’s military law test and reported him to the police, said it would “immediately start impeachment trials” against the acting president.
According to Democratic Party ground president Park Chan-dae, the difficulties demonstrate that the prime minister has no intention of breaking the law, and it amounts to admitting that he is acting as a surrogate for the insurgent at a party conference.
