Current use of NRIC numbers ‘leaves us vulnerable’: Why Singapore wants to change the way it uses identification numbers

NRIC numbers are used to identify you by identifying you by stating your name as the main goal. Nevertheless, they have been used for identification, or proving that you are who you claim to remain.

An NRIC cards can be used for identification because it contains a picture that enables users to verify that the picture matches the cardholder’s identity. NRIC figures only should not be accepted as verification.

We may believe that a large number of people are aware of our NRIC numbers, said Mrs. Teo.

Over period, NRIC numbers have significantly come to be used as more than just names, she said.

” This is not a good idea”, said Mrs Teo. One unauthorised may use our NRIC number to gain access because our NRIC figures are known to some individuals.

Because of our long-standing techniques and habits, which regard the NRIC numbers as classified information, people who are familiar with them can also create as figures of authority.

Mrs. Teo argued that despite having no secrets, we would be wary if someone unfamiliar with us called us title and acted as though we knew them. &nbsp,

” In the same way, this is how we should treat anyone who tells us our NRIC amount”, she said. &nbsp,

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE

Mrs. Teo argued that the current system required a shift in the context of the situation to refrain from using NRIC amounts as the only way to authenticate people because they were already vulnerable.

Masked NRIC statistics would also be discontinued, with additional identifiers used instead of full or partial figures.

We were aware that this would need to be done over a period of day, and a significant effort may be required to support Singaporeans comprehend the risks, she said.

The state began by urging its organizations to stop using NRIC figures as credentials or to establish who they claim to be. Additionally, it intends to apply masked NRIC amounts to existing companies when they are updated and stopped using them for new services.

Mrs Teo said the&nbsp, Personal Data Protection Commission’s ( PDPC ) guidelines will be updated to put a stop to the wrong uses of NRIC numbers and to reassure organisations that have “legitimate reasons” to use NRIC numbers. &nbsp,

Most people and organizations may continue doing what they are doing and still take care when handling NRIC figures.

” For agencies that are not using NRIC figures, whether full or partial, as passcode or id, everything has changed”, she said. ” But if they are, then they may cease these practices&nbsp, as soon as feasible”.

She said it needs to stop using NRIC figures as passwords or authentication because it is not safe to handle customer interactions.

” NOT RUSHING TO CHANGE POLICY”

While the state thinks decisive action must be taken, Mrs. Teo said that the specialists acknowledge that it will take time to alter mindsets and practices.

” That’s why we are not rushing to change plan. We will begin by focusing on the improper usage of NRIC figures and halting these practices,” she said. &nbsp,

The government’s decision to not use masked NRIC quantities has been the only change, which was communicated in a round in July. That is the location the government has adopted privately.

For the private sector, a conversation needs to be carried out.

” We haven’t decided”, she said. We want to talk with the exclusive market about how to determine whether you still need to obtain the complete NRIC number as a means of identification and what procedures can be put in place to ensure that you can carry out your duty of care.

After the conversation is completed, the PDPC suggestions will get adjusted if needed.

Full NRIC figures are likely to also be used in places like hospitals, where they can help you identify people more precisely.

However, different organizations can rely on email lists or mobile amounts to at least partially determine a man.

People should not be frightened to use their NRIC figures as identifiers with confidence, but they should also never attempt to conceal them or use them as credentials, according to Mrs. Teo.

” That puts the person in a prone position, and it’s not the right way of protecting them. The right way of protecting them is to step out the use of these concealed NRIC numbers, truly for the state”, she said.
