MANILA: On Monday, a mountain erupted in the country’s northern province, causing a massive dust row to fall into the sky as the government ordered the evacuation of nearby villages.
Rising more than 2, 400m above sea level on the main area of Negros, Kanlaon is one of 24 effective mountains in the Philippines.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported in a statement that an “explosive explosion occurred at the summit outlet of Kanlaon Volcano at 3.03 pm , today.”
” All local government units are advised to leave the volcano’s 6 km radius and be prepared for additional evacuation if necessary,” it continued.
A gigantic cauliflower-shaped gray mass of smoke billowed above Kanlaon’s crater in movie clips posted by local residents on social media.
Red-hot ashes and other materials were likewise falling on its southeasterly slope, according to the geosciences office, which rose 3, 000 meters above the exhaust.
The exercise indicates that a “magmatic eruption has begun and may lead to even more violent eruptions,” it continued.
After the mountain released thousands of tonnes of toxic gases in a single moment, hundreds of local residents were forced to flee in September.
