Dept warns of dubious job offers on social media sites

Scammers are using social media to trick people into sending money for illustrious jobs in Australia, according to the Department of Employment ( DoE ).

Somchai Morakotsriwan, the DoE director-general, said yesterday swindlers had advertised through their website and Instagram page promising a salary of 90, 000–120, 000 ringgit a quarter for a gardening work abroad.

He said they made promises to obtain three to five-year function permits.

He added that patients were also promised that their employers would pay for their hotel and pay related costs, including immigration fees, while they worked in Australia.

The swindlers demanded 100, 000–200, 000 ringgit in “operation charge” from the patients, he said.

Patients claimed they gave the scammers personal information, including duplicates of their passports, ID cards, and home membership, noting that they claimed they would use the documents for background checks and card applications. However, after receiving the money, the scammers was no longer be contacted and were never heard from once, he said.

He claimed that there are no fresh memoranda of understandings between the DoE and Australia regarding labor imports.
