SINGAPORE: Mr Lee Hsien Yang said on Tuesday ( Oct 22 ) that he is now a political refugee in the United Kingdom after seeking , asylum protection in 2022.
Citing the Singapore administration’s “attacks” against him, Mr Lee, the younger brother of former prime minister Lee Hsien Loong, said he sought hospital safety” as a last resort”.
In a Instagram post, he wrote,” I remain a member of Singapore and hope that one day it will be safe to return home.”
The Singapore government responded to press inquiries from The Guardian and  about Mr. Lee’s asylum status by saying that is” no basis” for states that there are criminal charges against him and that there are other allegations of political repression.
” Singapore’s court is objective and makes decisions independently. Singaporeans have a high level of trust in the judiciary because of this, the authorities continued.
It stated that Mr. Lee and his wife Mrs. Lee Suet Fern’s return to Singapore is subject to no constitutional restrictions.
” They are and have always been free to return to Singapore”, it added.
