SINGAPORE: An European surf has died after being struck by a fish while surfing off the east coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
Ms Giulia Manfrini, 36, was fatally injured after being impaled by the bill of the swordfish last Friday ( Oct 18 ) in the waters off , Ombak Bengbeng, near Masokut Island in Mentawai Islands Regency, reported Indonesian news agency Antara.
” Unexpectedly, a fish jumped towards Manfrini and struck her straight in the chest”, said , Lahmudin Siregar, the speaking brain of the , Mentawai Islands ‘ local disaster management company, according to Antara.
According to reports from the nearby Siberut Island authorities station, Ms. Manfrini managed to call for help by waving to two witnesses who were present. They immediately rushed her to the Pei Pei Pasakiat Taileleu Health Centre, Antara, where she had been spotted, and immediately waved to them as they arrived.  ,
Nevertheless, she could not be saved.
Her medical report revealed signs of drowning and a 5 cm-deep wound to her upper left stomach.
Ms Manfrini’s figure has been transported to the city of Padang and will be repatriated to Italy, Australia’s ABC News reported on Monday.
Fellow American media outlet , 9News reported on Tuesday that the bass involved in the incident was a needlefish, citing a local hotel.
Ms Manfrini’s dying was mourned by the president of her home, Venaria Reale, in a Facebook post next Saturday.
The news of her passing has shocked and left us feeling helpless in the wake of the horror that caused her death so prematurely, wrote Mr. Fabio Giulivi Sindacoe, who expressed his apologies to her family and friends.
Ms Manfrini had “fulfilled her double vision of practising riding, her favorite sports, and opening a travel agency for sports vacations”, he added.  ,
Her LinkedIn webpage lists her as the , co-founder of a beach vacation company, AWAVE Travel, and a freelancing search teacher with the International Surfing Association.
