China threatens Taiwan with more trade measures after denouncing president’s speech

China is considering further trade restrictions against Taiwan, the Ministry of Commerce reported on Saturday ( October 12 ), two days after Beijing criticised a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-Te.

The Democratic Progressive Party, Taiwan’s ruling party, has never taken any practical measures to pull” business limits” on mainland China, the business department said in a statement on its official website.

According to the statement, “relevant ministries are currently examining more actions based on the findings of the exploration into trade restrictions from Taiwan ( against mainland China )”.

China, which views politically governed Taiwan as its own place, abhors Lai as a” secessionist”. Lai and his government accept Beijing’s independence claims, saying merely Taiwan’s people can choose their upcoming.

Lai said at his opening address for the day that Taiwan had no right to represent Taiwan but that the area was willing to work with Beijing to address issues like climate change. He struck a strong and conciliatory tone, which drew ire from China.
