The fire struck the Pingtung state medical at around 09: 40 native time ( 01: 00 GMT )- just as Typhoon Krathon made land to the north, in neighbouring Kaohsiung.

The wet and windy conditions complicated the flames reply, one report said.

The cause of the fire- which was put out more than three hours later, authorities said- is still under inspection.

Some reports suggested there was an electronic sin at play.

About 300 sufferers were evacuated, and some others sought refuge in a local business facility.

A local military base’s men assisted in putting out the fire.
