Indian state reopens schools, restores internet after ethnic clashes

More than a week after shuttering due to deadly ethnic violence and clashes between protesters and police, schools in India’s northeastern state of Manipur reopened on Tuesday ( Sep 17 ), according to the local government.

In May of this year, fighting broke out in Manipur between the largely Hindu Meitei lot and the largely Christian Kuki area. This ethnic conflict has since claimed at least 200 lives.

Communities have since split up in neighboring regions of the northern state, which are divided into foe groups.

At least 11 people were killed this month in an uptick in crime, including by militants who reportedly used drones to drop bombs and rockets during the months of relative calm.

In the state capital Imphal, Meitei students staged following demonstrations that turned violent, leading to the government to impose a law and an internet shutdown in some areas of the state.
