PHITSANULOK- Jadet Jantar of the coalition-core Pheu Thai Party won the by-election in district 1 on Sunday, beating his single player, Nathachanon Chanaburanasak of the opposition Women’s Party.

The unofficial results from Sunday night’s vote counting showed that Mr. Jadet had 37, 209 seats and Mr. Nathachanon had 30 and 640.

Pheu Thai’s front-line leaders held a press conference at a restaurant in the Muang city. The victory, according to Somsak Thepsutin, the minister for public health, signifies that the people of  this northwestern province have elected their initial Pheu Thai MP in about 20 years. This demonstrated that Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Pheu Thai’s new prime minister, was widely regarded as trustworthy.

Sarayoot Jailak, secretary-general of the Women’s Party, said the group had yet to start serious fighting. Acting spokeswoman Parit Wacharasindhu stated that Mr. Nathachanon and his team would continue to serve the electorate.

Voter turnout for Sunday’s by-election was 54.95 % of the 138, 705 available citizens, with 67, 849 true votes cast.

The by-election was called after the sitting part, Padipat Santipada, was banned from politics for 10 years following the defection of the Move Forward Party, which has been reborn as the Women’s Party.
