As the new defense minister, deputy prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai made it abundantly clear that he would never try to exert the government’s professional power over the military forces, but instead work side-by-side with them to confirm they serve the public well in the best interests of society.
After the state releases its policy speech in parliament, Mr. Phumtham then anticipates taking on his position on Monday. That is expected to occur over the next two weeks, starting monday.
He replaces Sutin Klungsang, who lost his job due to the government change.
Mr. Phumtham stated that he intends to meet with the armed forces officials over a supper on Monday.
Before addressing the audience about the government’s defense guidelines, he anticipates receiving a ministry of defense presentation. After the conference, he promised to examine the soldiers of honor.
After speaking with the armed forces ‘ officials and getting input from government professionals, he said he would think about approving the record of reshuffled military appointments.
When asked if he felt pressured to act quickly because the deadline for Sept. 15 had already been set, he replied that he did n’t really feel that way. This was based on the idea that all parties were informed that everything had been suspended until the new government took office, so there could still be difficulties.
” We will make every effort to begin working as soon as possible and adhere to the date.” But if, in the end, we miss it… everyone else should understand”, he said.
The checklist of suggested replacement meetings was discussed at next week’s meeting of armed forces leaders and defense ministry professionals.
The military authorities agreed at the conclusion of the meeting that they should wait for the new defence minister to have the last say on the change because some ideas, including that of the new military commander, were also up for discussion.
