Indian state imposes curfew after ethnic clashes

After violent demonstrations staged to condemn the most recent round of killings in ethnic clashes, authorities in India’s trouble-torn northeastern state of Manipur imposed a curfew on Tuesday ( Sep 10 ).

For more than a year, there have been clashes between the state’s largely Hindu Meitei lot and the largely Christian Kuki community, which have divided the state into ethnic enclaves.

Last year, at least 11 people were killed in an escalating conflict between the two areas, after months of comparative quiet.

After student-led demonstrations on Monday sparked conflicts with officers, the curfew was put in place in the state capital Imphal and the nearby valley.

Students “provoked” safety officials protecting the condition governor’s mansion in Imphal” by pelting stones and throwing cheap bottles”, authorities said in a statement on Monday.

According to the speech, activists in another river city allegedly snatched weapons from police and fired at them.

One police officer was struck by a live large on the left knee, and another was struck by an unidentified projectile in the face, according to the statement.

A” full midnight” was announced in a nearby government notice,” with immediate effect until further orders are given.”
