According to Caretaker Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Thamanat Prompow, relevant organizations should otherwise develop a new flood elimination strategy rather than building the idea of building Kaeng Suea Ten Dam.
Capt Thamanat, the president’s director, Sitang Pilailar, claimed at a department executive meeting on Monday that the Kaeng Suea Ten program is not what the government may be pushing for at the moment.
Rather, it should prioritize offering relief to disaster victims and preventing flood in the Yom River valley, which includes Sukhothai county.
Capt Thamanat also urged the Royal Irrigation Department ( RID ) to look into new ways to address the issue, according to Ms Sitang, rather than sticking to an outdated plan that would harm neighborhood communities.
She claims that the department is working on projects to manage the flow of water from rivers and construct little reservoirs along these tributaries.
She claimed that some projects are undergoing Environmental Impact Assessments ( EIA ) while others are in the design phase.
She gave instances of water management initiatives in the Phrae district of Ngao and the Phayao district, each aiming to divert at least 70 million cubic meters ( m3 ) of water from overflowing to the Yom basin. These jobs are in the process of finding companies.
Ms. Sitang noted that there is also work being done to speed up water drains before it enters the Had Saphan Chan ocean doorway in Sukhothai province.
To avoid 500 million m3 of water from entering Sukhothai and deflect 1,200 million m3 through the Nan River, the effort is anticipated to increase capacity and increase drainage capabilities.
Additionally, strategies are being considered for adding dams along the Nan River. On the west, rivers divert water away from metropolitan areas.
Ms. Sitang stated that the RID had stated that it would consult with the case to decide whether the Kaeng Suea Ten Dam may be pursued or abandoned.
Nevertheless, she has seen no action from the RID.
She explained that a 30-year-old EIA for the Kaeng Suea Ten Dam venture was carried out. A new research may be required, even if there were intentions to continue with the project.
Hannarong Yaowalers, president of the Foundation for Integration of Water Management, urged all relevant authorities to examine the data extensively.
According to Mr. Hannarong, the Kaeng Suea Ten Dam’s power may be reached in only five days if the Ping River Basin’s combined water supply was allotted.
He questioned the worth of destroying dozens of neighborhood homes and losing over 60, 000 acres of prime bush.
