Six dead in Thailand after drinking bootleg liquor

BANGKOK: &nbsp, At least six people have died and more than 20 have been hospitalised in Thailand after drinking methanol-laced bootleg alcohol, authorities said on Wednesday ( Aug 28 ).

Authorities located 19 improper roads drinking stands, according to the Thai city’s administration, in the Khlong Sam Wa area on the north edge of Bangkok, where the deaths occurred primarily.

Thailand, a predominately Buddhist country, has tight alcohol laws that forbid sales of alcohol during certain times of the day and on religious holidays.

However, according to critics, the regulations promote a flourishing black market for inexpensive, unlicensed” Ya Dong”-style spirits.

Somwang Chaiprakraiwan, the best local official in Khlong Sam Wa area, said officials had cracked down on illegal liquor stores in the area.

According to Somwang, “police and the Department of Excise have arrested and detained them.”

Methanol is frequently added to illegal beverages to enhance its potency. If ingested, alcohol can cause deafness, heart damage and death.
