Apple eyes bigger slice of India’s streaming market with Airtel deal

Bangalore: Apple and Airtel are working together to provide free access to thousands of consumers in a price-sensitive business by offering the telecom company’s premium clients its music and video streaming services.

The shift comes as regulators closely monitor the US$ 28 billion pleasure market in India, and a$ 8 billion merger of Reliance and Walt Disney’s American media assets is being investigated.

Airtel and Airtel said in a declaration on Tuesday that” Apple TV may come bundled with superior Airtel WiFi and Postpaid plans” but that neither company’s offer value or prices were disclosed.

With mostly English-language content, Apple TV is a small player in the Indian market, where its rivals include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Hotstar and billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s JioCinema.

Apple is partnering with rivals to combine streaming services with telecommunication plans to expand its market more quickly.

In addition to their plans, superior users of Airtel’s bandwidth and monthly services can later this month entry Apple TV and Apple Music.

According to two resources with direct knowledge of the situation, Airtel may discontinue its audio app Wynk while doing this, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Airtel has about 281 million users for its India telecommunication services, while its best enemy, Ambani’s Reliance Jio, has about 489 million.
