Thousands of people marched to the streets of Kolkata early on Thursday morning ( Aug 15 ) to protest the rape and murder of a doctor, which has sparked protests in India demanding better safety for women.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has demanded sharp punishment for those who commit “monstrous activities” against women following the discovery of the 31-year-old’s brutalized body last week at a state-run clinic.
A light protest at midnight coincided with India’s celebrations on Thursday as huge crowds marched through Kolkata’s streets in West Bengal to denounce the killing.
The demonstrators in Kolkata staged written signs demanding activity under the phrase “reclaim the day” and demanded a wider ban on violence against women.
” We want justice”, read one sign at the protest. ” Stand the murderer, save the women”, read another.
” The crimes against people do not stop”, evening activist Monalisa Guha told Kolkata’s The Telegraph paper.
” We face harassment about on a regular basis”, another activist, Sangeeta Halder, told the routine. ” But hardly leaving out of fear is not the answer,” says the statement.
