‘Heartbroken’ but proud, Max Maeder’s parents reflect on their child’s historic Olympic medal for Singapore

Paris: Minutes after securing his  Hwee Keng Maeder and her brother Maximilian shared a quiet time after winning the Olympic award.

Hands draped around the 17-year-old kitefoiler, her communication was straightforward- that although he was upset, he had made story.

On Friday ( August 9 ), Matere won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, making him the youngest Singaporean to do so.

He also ended his country’s eight-year wait for an Olympic podium finish, since sprinter Joseph Schooling won silver in 2016.

But there were mingled feelings for  the back-to-back earth hero, after a three-race, two-day last which ended with  Austria’s Valentin Bontus winning golden while Slovenia’s Toni Vodisek took gold.

“ I’ll speak the truth and say I have n’t finished sulking, but I’m putting a smile on now,” said Maeder. ” I still need to practice whatever that’s going on because, yeah, it’s a ton. “

This was immediately apparent to her son, who did n’t want to disappoint, thanks to Shee Keng.

“ I know my brother, he does n’t feel good about himself … he felt like he let a lot of people down.

He is terrible, so I’m heartbroken. “
