Ms. Kayi had previously claimed she was never married and that she was perhaps having illusions when she gave her first assertion, according to Saurabh Agarwal, superintendent of police for Sindhudurg.
She told them she was upset because her card expired and she was running out of money, so she bought locks and bars and tied herself to a tree.

Police claimed to have found a duplicate of her passport, which stated she was a Massachusetts resident, as well as some other documents containing her household address in Tamil Nadu. She also had a mobile phone, a tablet and 31, 000 rupees ($ 370, £290 ) in her possession.
Ms. Kayi scribbled notes on a pad to communicate with the authorities and doctors after she was immediately able to communicate.
