The daily usage of the Thang Rath application has increased 15-fold with the 10,000-baht digital wallet cash handout scheme to open for registration via the application on Thursday, according to Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong.

Mr Prasert revealed on Monday that the Thang Rath application’s average daily usage jumped from 50,000-60,000 to 800,000-900,000 logins.

The increase came after the Finance Ministry announced last Wednesday that citizens who have smartphones will be able to register for the digital wallet scheme via the application from Thursday until September 15, he said.

Mr Prasert added that the Digital Economy and Society Ministry recommends that citizens with smartphones complete the identity verification process on the application before Thursday when official registration begins.

”The average daily usage of the Thang Rath application is expected to grow further to around six million daily logins during the registration period,” he said.

Thursday’s initial rush of applicants has already sparked predictions of internet outages.

Meanwhile, Mr Prasert said the registration period for citizens without smartphones will begin on Sept 16 and run until Oct 15.

“As for businesses and merchants, they will be able to register from Oct 1, also via the Thang Rath application,” he said.

Mr Prasert said people can find out more by calling the 1111 24-hour hotline. The Digital Economy and Society Ministry has prepared 500 staff members to answer citizens’ questions and provide them with support.
