SAMUT PRAKAN: Fishermen in the county that borders Bangkok’s eastern end claim that all of their catches then only contain blackchin fish, despite the claim that Thai fishermen can produce 1 million babies per time.
Fishermen in Bang Bo district’s tambon Khlong Dan claimed that the mysterious fish species was the only species of fish that could be caught in nearby waterways, and that other species that were once common, like tilapia, had almost completely vanished.
Sitthikorn Ekwong, age 21, caught blackchin fishes on Saturday afternoon when he cast his nets in the Khlong Dan canal for the cameras of the day.

Pisamon Srisin, a 75-year-old native resident, reported last month that she started to notice blackchin fish in tambon Khlong Dan. She is currently the only fisherman in the world. She claimed that blackchin fishes were nutritious but had a harder flesh than native fish.
Because blackchin tilapia breed quite quickly and consume all other smaller water animals and plants, Thanapote Songkran, Moo 6 village headman in tambon Khlong Da, expressed his serious concern for the growing population of the species. He exhorted interested organizations to protect the types.
Thanaporn Jiansuk, chairman of the Khlong Dan Fishery Association, said blackchin fish bred pretty quickly as it took just 22 days from the egg-laying level to spawning. As many as 99 % of their eggs hatched, she said.
