‘Miracles’ and hope: Stampede spotlights India’s craze for godmen

LINE TO GOD

According to two neighbors who have known him since he was a child, including Ramkumari, he allegedly chose the path after realizing a divine nature had given him mystical abilities about 25 years ago. He quit the authorities in the area of Agra and started preaching, they said.

Eventually, Baba asserted that he had a strong relationship with God and that he could give people divine blessings.

Suraj Pal was being brought into the village by a line of cars, and people soon announced that he would be known as a Baba (elder ), Ramkumari said.

Reuters was unable to reach Baba. He informed Reuters companion ANI that he was grieving and that his supporters would assist the injured and the deceased’s individuals.

Out of the roughly 250, 000 people who had congregated in a canopied paddy field to listen to him, many were running after his car when he was leaving. 121 people, mostly women, were killed and scores injured by the stampede at his gathering on Tuesday ( Jul 2 ), with many fleeing after one another.

Officials claim that they had restricted access to just 80, 000 people and have arrested six Baba’s aides who were in charge of the event’s planning. On Friday, the principal organizer gave himself to the authorities.

According to the authorities, Baba claimed in the early days of his rise to fame that he could bring the dead back to life and even attempted to remove the body of a 16-year-old woman from a cremation, promising a mystery to the household. The incident was quickly resolved and authorities intervened.

He is depicted in traditional Indian shirt tunics or immaculate white suits and ties, frequently sporting sunglasses, in posters and videos posted on YouTube, a derogatory of the athenian image of most godmen.

However, his strength is smaller than other experts and godmen in India, including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Sadhguru. Yoga expert Baba Ramdev, who is near to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is the owner of the booming Ayurvedic consumer goods company.

After centuries of attracting thousands of followers to their speeches and ashrams, two godmen, Asaram Bapu and Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, were both found guilty of rape in individual circumstances and sentenced to prison.
