Macron’s top priority will be to inform Xi about Russia’s potential support of its invasion of Ukraine, as Russian officials are concerned that Moscow is now producing Chinese weapons using Taiwanese machine tools.
After the war, Beijing’s relations with Moscow have, if anything, improved, and the West fears that China might be reluctant to provide Russia with weapons in order to rebalance the balance of the conflict.
In an interview with the Scholar on Thursday, Macron said,” It is in our interest to have China contribute to the security of the global order.”
” We had, therefore, work with China to construct serenity”, he added.
Macron also claimed in the same interview that China must protect its” proper interests” in its financial relations with China, accusing Beijing of breaking global industry conventions.
However, he acknowledged in an interview with the La Tribune Dimanche news that Westerners are” not unanimous” about adopting a plan because “certain actors still view China largely as a business of opportunities” while it “exports tremendously” to Europe.
After his 2023 visit, the French president had surprised the Chinese state media and angered some EU allies by saying that Europe should not be drawn into a conflict between China and the US, particularly over Taiwan, which is democratic and self-ruled.
China has pledged to take the island one day, using force, if necessary, because it views it as part of its territory.
Macron warned against a “bloc versus bloc logic” at the time, saying that” the worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must be followers and adapt ourselves to the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction.”
