CHON BURI: The popular holiday island of Koh Lan, off Pattaya, is facing a water scarcity, with people forced to pay high costs for click water brought in and sold by private providers.

As Thai and international tourists travel to the isle to recover from the heatwave, there has been a shortage of rain and a great demand for water.

There are 5, 000- 8, 000 visitor arrivals a moment, generating a great income for the beach, about 8 kilometres&nbsp, from the Pattaya beach.

Kanchanop Sukkhi, a native resident, reported on Tuesday that while water was usually little during the dry period, it was inadequate this year to meet demand.

Personal manufacturers were making the most of the shortage.

Typically, they charged 150 ringgit per kilo. Each vehicle carried two tonnes of waters, or 300 ringgit per trip, rising to 350- 400 ringgit per trip when demand was great.

Nevertheless, with the latest drought the cost had soared to 1, 000- 2, 000 ringgit per vacation, Mr Kanchanop said.

Residents and businesses operating on the island were put under a significant financial burden by the rising cost of tap water from secret suppliers, he said.
