Indonesia lowers Mount Ruang volcano alert level, reopens nearby airport

The nearest international airport reopened after being closed for days on Monday ( Apr 22 ), helping Indonesian authorities lower the alert level of a far-off volcano that erupted more than a dozen times in the past week.

After it sparked the departure of thousands last week when it sparked a spectacular combination of lava, charcoal columns, and thunder, officials had warned that the risk from the Mount Ruang stratovolcano in Indonesia’s outer territory was far from over.

However, volcanic action has since cooled down at the crater, and on Monday, the country’s geological company raised the alert amount to the second-highest of a four-tiered program.

Based on the findings of physical and orchestral monitoring, which indicate a decrease in Mt. Ruang’s volcanic activity, the status level is… has been reduced from Level IV to Level III, according to Hendra Gunawan, head of the geological organization.

An exclusion corridor was narrowed by the organization from 6 km to 4 km.

Sam Ratulangi International Airport in the municipal capital of Manado, more than 100km from the volcano, reopened on Monday evening, authorities said.

It came after days of shutdown at the airport, where some carriers fly to Singapore, South Korea and China, because of volcanic ash.

More than 6,000 citizens of neighbouring Tagulandang area, home to around 20,000 persons, were evacuated outside the isolation area after the explosions began, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Due to its position on the Pacific” Ring of Fire,” Indonesia frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity.
