15 dead, two missing after Indonesia landslide

KARTA: Following a landslide in central Indonesia, at least 15 people have been found dead and two more are missing, according to local authorities on Sunday ( Apr 14 ).

According to local disaster agency head Sulaiman Maila, the lifeless and two survivors were ushered out of the Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi state, region the disaster struck on Saturday evening.

” Two of them survived while 15 some sadly passed away”, Maila told AFP on Sunday.

” According to reports from people, there are still two people reported missing, apparently buried under the flood dirt”.

Tana Toraja and its surrounding regions have been” regularly hit by large precipitation, especially over the past year, with hardly any stop”, he added.

He claimed that the heavy rains had caused mudslides that had buried people ‘ homes in residential areas on mountain slopes.

The flood impacted two settlements, burying four homes, the National Disaster Management Agency said in a written statement.

Indonesia is liable to floods during the rainy season, and forest has made the issue worse in some places, with prolonged heavy rainfall causing flooding in some parts of the island.

At least 30 people were killed by flash floods and landslides on Sumatra area last month, with values more also missing.

At least two people were killed when a hotel near Lake Toba in Sumatra was destroyed by a disaster and flooding in December.
