Over the first three weeks of this Songkran festival’s road safety campaign year, 116 fatalities and almost 1, 000 injuries have been claimed in traffic accidents.
Withaya Yamuang, assistant permanent director for transportation, said on Sunday that from April 11 to 13 there were 936 traffic fatalities, 116 mortality and 968 hurt people. The most prevalent causes of the injuries were speeding and consume driving.
On Saturday April 13 or the Songkran ( Thai New Year ) day only, there were 392 traffic accidents in which 48 people lost their lives and a further 411 were injured, Mr Withaya said.
The southern regions of Nakhon Si Thamma and Songkhla recorded the highest number of fatalities, 19 each, followed by 16 in Nan and 15 in Chiang Rai.
Bangkok saw the highest death burden, four, followed by three fatallities each in Chanthaburi, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Phetchabun.
23 people were injured in Songkhla, followed by 21 in Nan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and 17 in Nan.
Speeding was the most frequent reason, resulting in 157 incidents on Saturday, followed by drink driving accountable for 109 incidents.
On Saturday customers incidents involved 342 riders, 26 cabs and 18 passenger vehicles. According to authorities, 297 of the drivers did not wear a crash hat.
However, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroonruangkit said from April 11 to 13, individuals made 8.06 million trips on all kinds of transport and transportation rose by 5.39 % year- on- time.
Most trips, 45.28 %, were made on trains, followed by 33.80 % on roads and 11.49 % by air, he said.
