Group urges more jail time

The Do n’t Drive Drunk Foundation is calling on the government to increase the jail term for drunk drivers who cause fatal accidents.

Dr. Taejing Siripanich, the organization’s secretary-general, stated that his organization had submitted a proposal to the Transport Ministry calling on it to raise the penalties for drunk drivers who cause lethal auto accidents by extending their prison sentences from 3 to 11 to 13 years.

He argued that Thailand needs to take more severe action against these drunken vehicles, noting that many of them have already been detained for causing an accident-related death.

He revealed that the Transport Minister had endorsed the idea.

According to Dr Taejing, there were 264 deaths and 2, 208 injuries caused by careless driving habits, including drunken driving, driving at a higher rate and breaking different traffic rules, during next week’s Songkran vacation.

Surapong Piyachote, the lieutenant transport secretary, claimed that Srettha Thavisin, the secretary, had instructed all sectors to ensure travel convenience and safety during the Songkran holiday, which lasts for seven days.
