Singapore deepening understanding of nuclear energy, but no decision made on deployment: EMA, NEA

Nevertheless, the use of nuclear energy does have its hazards. Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan was a panic in March 2011 due to an earthquake and a subsequent tsunami, which caused all residents who lived within a 20km radius to be evacuated due to concerns about radiation contamination.

There is a needed to continue developing capabilities to better understand the health, security, and economic implications of superior nuclear power technologies for Singapore’s context, according to the NEA and EMA spokeswoman on Friday.

Among these attempts are those that involve funding research into nuclear safety through programs like the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Initiative and educational activities like the Nuclear Safety Research and Education Programme.

Singapore is also collaborating with international organizations to advance its knowledge of developing nuclear technologies, aid data sharing, and develop capabilities in emergency preparedness and response.

According to the government, NEA is a key part of the ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy ( ASEANTOM), which aims to promote regulatory pursuits and further advance nuclear safety, security, and protection within the ASEAN Community.
