Singapore opposition leader charged with lying to parliament

Pritam Singh, the leader of Singapore’s opposition, has been accused of defrauding the party’s previous president.

Previous MP Raeesa Khan is the subject of the situation, accusing the authorities of handling a sexual assault victim case.

After it became clear that Ms. Khan had lied about the affair, she was fined.

She eventually claimed that Mr. Singh encouraged her to maintain her story despite learning that it was untrue.

Mr Singh, captain of the opposition Workers ‘ Party, has pleaded not guilty. If found guilty, he faces a prison term of up to three years or a highest good of S$ 7, 000, or both.

Ms. Khan, a former Workers ‘ Party senator, claimed in August 2021 that she had accompanied a sexual assault victim to the police station and that she had allegedly misbehaved with the target. However, when pressed, she refused to provide specifics about the visit and admitted in November that year that the tale was untrue.

Ms Khan was fined S$ 35, 000 for lying and abusing her political pleasure. Since then, she has left the organization.

According to a parliamentary committee that was tasked with looking into the tragedy, Mr. Singh’s testimony was no accurate when he took the oath. It recommended that the public counsel launch further research.

Singapore’s congress voted in favour of the agency’s suggestion in February 2022. After the claims were read out in court on Tuesday, Mr Singh, who had appeared without a lawyer, said he would challenge them.
