SINGAPORE: Thinking that he was being overcharged, a crazy person refused to pay his car fare after arriving at his property.
He frequently yelled that he was a Singaporean and scuffled with the taxi drivers and cursed at the police officials who took him into custody.
At one place, one of the soldiers responded:” I’m also Taiwanese”.
Dong Wei, a 43- year- old Singaporean, was jailed on Friday ( Mar 15 ) for four weeks and fined S$ 3, 000 ( US$ 2, 240 ).
He entered a guilty plea to three counts, including deliberately inflicting pain on a common servant, using abusive language on a public maid, and using legal force on a public servant.
Another two fees were considered in punishment.
THE Event
On March 17, 2020, the jury heard that Dong met his friends for drinks at Copthorne Waterfront Hotel.
Around 11.55 p.m. that evening, he took a taxi opposite the lodge and headed for a property in Sin Ming.
A security guard inquired about the product number when they arrived at the apartments.
The taxi driver, who is 59 years older, repeatedly asked Dong, who looked at him with a bewildered expression and refused to respond.
The security protect instructed the cabby to waited by the side of the road when Dong did not provide a product range.
Dong vomited in the vehicle as the car driver attempted to free him from his drunken sleep.
The driver next asked Dong to arrive, and Dong began walking towards his apartment.
But the drivers stopped Dong, reminding him about the suffer, and called for police support.
The taxi drivers attempted to stop Dong when he attempted to get home again, pulling or grabbing his arm.
They began scuffling and in the method, Dong slapped and punched the cabby’s head and face. Close-circuit broadcast footage was used to document the assault.  ,
Soon after, the officers arrived and took Dong into custody for aggressive behavior while he was intoxicated.
In the earlier hours of March 18, 2020, the group of officers led Dong to the local jail at the Central Police Divisional Headquarters.
Dong hurled vulgar things at people who refused to cooperate with a blood pressure test.
When one of the officials advised him to engage and thinking his speech,  , Dong responded:” I’m ****ing being arrested for everything. ****ing take your hands off”.
He added that he did not deserve this because he was a Singaporean in the film images that was shown in court.
Dong sat down on a seat and yelled at him. Next he looked at one of the police officers and yelled “you the ****er” and “you are the ****ing.”
The police finally moved Dong to a chair and moved him to a different area.
Dong kicked one of the soldiers ‘ buttocks while the officers were filling out the paperwork while Dong was doing it.
Surprised, the official turned round, just to get another push on his thigh.
Andre Jumabhoy, who wanted a total of two to three weeks in jail and a S$ 3,000 fine, defended Dong.
MITIGATION
Mr. Jumabhoy claimed that his customer had never made the physical contact with the cab.
Dong was “aggrieved” that the vehicle drivers was attempting to charge him with a charge of S$ 29, the prosecutor said.
According to Mr. Jumabhoy, because Dong had recently taken vehicles home from the resort at about the same time, he was aware of this and became agitated as a result.
He claimed that his client, who had two younger children under the age of 18, was a “valuable and contributing member of society” with a Nanyang Technological University engineering level.
According to the attorney, the crimes took place in a setting where Dong had lost his job and relationship and had become the single parent of his two young children.
The accused borrowed funds from his family to launch a business in China to provide for his children, according to Mr. Jumabhoy, who was unable to find employment and was struggling to support his family.
He claimed that due to the COVID-19 crisis, his client after learned that his wife had spent a significant portion of his money on herself and that his company started losing money.
” It is for him now to take this opportunity to reflect on how far he has fallen and how he can change his own mistakes into a lesson for his children,” said the attorney.
