American authorities are describing the incidents of people of a Sri Lankan home, including four young kids, in Ottawa as a “mass killing”.
Authorities say the six patients were outsiders to Canada, and the youngest was less than three months old.
A 19- yr- ancient student from Sri Lanka who lived with the home has been charged in the murders.
” This was a foolish act of violence perpetrated on strictly honest people”, said Ottawa’s police commander on Thursday.
Officers responded to emergency calls placed at approximately 22: 52 local time ( 03: 52 GMT ) on Wednesday from the Ottawa suburb of Barrhaven.
When they arrived, police captain Eric Stubbs said officers immediately identified the suspect, who was arrested without event.
Officers then entered the home and discovered the subjects, which included a mother, her four children, and an acquaintance who was living with the home.
The victims were identified as 35- year- ancient Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake and her four children: seven- year- ancient Inuka Wickramasinghe, four- year- ancient Ashwini Wickramasinghe, two- year- older Rinyana Wickramasinghe and two- month- aged Kelly Wickramasinghe.
The friendship and fifth deceased victim was identified as 40- season- old Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon.
Chief Stubbs said the mother’s parents suffered injury and was taken to hospital in critical but stable condition.
The believe was identified by authorities as 19- yr- ancient Febrio De- Zoysa. He has been charged with six counts of earliest- level murder and one count of attempted murder.
Chief Stubbs said the subjects were killed and injured using an “edged tool”. The officers investigation is ongoing.
He said the incident is the biggest murder case in Ottawa’s recent history, calling it a “real tragedy” that would continue to have a” significant” impact on the nation’s capital city.
” I’m positive the impact on the community is great”, he added, while emphasising that residents and community members should continue to stay away from the place.
In a separate meeting with CBC News earlier on Thursday, he mistakenly referred to the event as a “mass shooting”, which was afterwards corrected.
In Toronto on Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed” shock and horror” at the event, which he called a “terrible assault”.
Ottawa’s governor called the various killing function “one of the most startling incidents of violence in our city’s history”.
” We are proud to live in a secure area but this information is disconcerting to all Ottawa people”, Mark Sutcliffe wrote in a blog on X, formerly known as Twitter.
” Thank you to our crisis responders who are investigating and supporting those who are affected by this terrible function”, he added.
