In connection with the gang rape of a Spanish tourist, five more men have been detained in India, according to local media reports on Tuesday ( Mar 5 ).
The couple was camping in Dumka region in northeast India last week when they were attacked by the lady who was riding a motorcycle with her husband.
In front of seated police officers, the Press Trust of India ( PTI ) news agency broadcast footage of five suspects being handcuffed and tied to one another in a line by a rope.
Three more men showed up in court on Monday, both of whom had sacks on their heads, and were afterwards placed in protective custody.
According to PTI, older local police officer Pitamber Singh Kherwar said,” We have arrested eight suspects in total since the three earlier arrested gave a fresh speech, in which they mentioned five more titles.”
Any of the people, according to Kherwar, had face” tight abuse” if found innocent.
He continued,” We are making a strong case against them.”
According to journalist Tv, the authorities have paid the couple a check in the amount of US$ 12, 000 as compensation as part of a “victim compensation scheme.”
Following the most recent detention, the lady posted a statement on social media.
She thanked the “efficient” police, saying,” They have caught all the thieves, and there were eight in total.”
” I ask for justice for all of the people who also have to go through this,” she said.
According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, nearly 90 assaults were reported on average each day in India in 2022.
However, a large number of cases are unidentified because of the stigma surrounding victims and the lack of trust in police investigations.
Beliefs continue to be uncommon, with cases lasting years stuck in India’s jammed criminal justice system.
In 2012, the famous gang rape and murder of an American student made international headlines.
On a bus in New Delhi in December that time, a 23-year-old physiotherapy pupil was raped, assaulted, and left for dead by five people and a girl.
The tragic violence led to the introduction of the death sentence for rape and weeks of protests over India’s higher levels of sexual violence.
