One dead, 24 rescued off Japanese fishing boat

On Monday ( Mar 4 ) in Tokyo, one person died and 24 others were saved after their fishing boat lost power and veered onto rocks in rough seas off Japan, according to the coast guard.

The team huddled on deck while a helicopter hovered over the 56-metre vessel as it was pounded by waves on its side, according to extraordinary television footage.

Five Chinese nationals and 20 Citizens made up the tuna-fishing boat’s crew.

Off the Izu archipelago north of Japan’s major area of Honshu, a coast guard official reported to AFP that the vessel had motor problems on Sunday evening.

All but one of the staff people had been rescued by Monday night in an activity involving police boats and aircraft, he said.

The body of the missing Chinese staff member was afterwards discovered, according to the beach watch.
