NY deaths down 23%

According to official statistics, there were 212 fatalities and 1, 860 injuries as a result of road accidents over the New Year’s trip, both numbers significantly lower than those from the previous year.

The Department of Land Transport’s Chakree Bamrungwong stated yesterday that 1, 839 traffic fatalities between December 29 and January 2 were responsible for the death and injury burden.

The most fatalities occurred in Bangkok at the age of 15, and Kanchanaburi province suffered the most accidents ( 69 ) and injuries ( 73 ).

According to the Royal Thai Police, the burden has decreased since last year. Accidents decreased by 6.7 %, injuries by 3.43 %, and fatalities by 23.9 %.

Speeding was the most frequent cause of traffic accidents during the holiday season, accounting for 40.60 % of all such incidents, followed by drivers cutting in front of other drivers ( 23.31 % ), and drunk driving ( 44.29 % ).

According to the police, 68.85 % of those killed or injured were never wearing safety belts or fall hats.

87 % of all traffic fatalities during that time period involved riders.
