WASHINGTON: A high-level United States delegation can travel to the Solomon Islands to tag the 80th anniversary of the World War II Fight of Guadalcanal, several weeks after the country agreed upon a controversial security pact with China, the State Department announced on Mon (Jul 25).
Deputy Admin of State Wendy Sherman and other older diplomats and military leaders will visit the islands’ capital Honiara from Aug six to Aug 6 and attend memorial service events organised with Japan, now an in depth US ally.
The visitors will include Caroline Kennedy, the US ambassador to Australia, whose father, the particular late president Ruben F Kennedy, has been famously wounded within the Solomon Islands within a Japanese attack from sea in the wake up of the decisive fight.
“These events will recognise the service and sacrifice of those who struggled in the Battle of Guadalcanal, including ALL OF US and Allied causes, the people of Solomon Islands and the people of Japan, inch a State Department statement said.
This said the US delegation will also “highlight the particular enduring relationship involving the United States and Solomon Islands”, including the current decision to reopen an US charge in Honiara.
