SINGAPORE: A new phishing scam involving Facebook advertisements offering affordable luggage was reported by the police on Thursday ( Dec7 ).
Travel backpacks can be purchased from” Singapore Airlines Travel” for as little as S$ 2 in Facebook ads or posts. These accounts use the ( SIA ) logo of Singapore Airlines as their profile photo.
14 victims have been the victims of this scam since November, with losses totaling at least S$ 799 ( US$ 597 ).
Victims are taken to a phishing site and asked to enter their credentials, such as their name, email address, and payment card information, after clicking on the Twitter advertisement or article to purchase the luggage.
Their credit card information would then be abused by con artists.
According to the police, victims just realized they had been duped after being informed of or found illegal transactions on their card statements.
The policeman advised the general public to take safety precautions like downloading the ScamShield apps and enabling two-factor verification for bank transactions.
According to the authorities,” Watch out for telltale signs of a phishing site and if the offer is also good to be true, it probably is. If such deals are available, check with the company on its established website.”
Never share your personal information or pay passport details with anyone if in doubt.
