SINGAPORE: A company director was given a 22-week prison term on November 24 for numerous health violations made at the job site. This resulted in the serious injury of the construction contractor, who was left bedridden and unable to communicate.
Denny Nasution Chng, the sole director of the building construction firm Ossis,  , was in charge of creating and putting into place a sound workplace safety and health framework for all worksite activities, according to the Ministry of Manpower’s ( MOM) news release on Thursday ( Dec 7 ).
The government claimed that in addition to failing to conduct any kind of threat assessment, he also failed to implement any drop prevention measures for work done on a roof canopy.
” A employer suffered serious injuries as a result of his blatant disrespect for workplace safety and health techniques.”
As part of the company’s labor supply deal with Fortrust Construction &, Consultant, Ossis assigned the hurt worker and another to carry out restoration work at a site.
Tiling and decoration cracks in the wall next to a roofing canopy were part of the project’s scope. At a slope of about 3.5 meters above the first floor, this dome ceiling was put in place.
The two workers started applying white clay to the roof cracks on March 4, 2021, after entering the ceiling canopy through a screen from the second-floor bedroom.
Around 2:00 p.m., they finished the stucco and briefly stopped work to wait for it to clean.
The injured worker asked his coworker to get some things from a nearby supermarket at around 3 p.m. The coworker came back about 15 hours later to find him lying face down on the first floor.
The gentleman was taken to the hospital, where he was given a serious traumatic brain injury with numerous cranial hemorrhages. He is still confined to his bed and is silent.
Ossis violated a number of workplace health regulations, according to MOM studies.
The business neglected to recognize the risks associated with the repairing work and assess the safety and health challenges posed to workers.  ,
To reduce the risks that employees are exposed to when performing the work engagement, it did not adopt measures like safe work processes.
Additionally, Ossis did not guarantee that workers had the proper training, guidance, and supervision to carry out their work at height or that they had powerful travel restraints to anchor to at all times when performing the work activity on the roof canopy.
Chng was given a 22-week prison term under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
According to the ministry, smaller-scale construction projects like additions and alterations, renovation, and facility management were to blame for 66 % of fatal injuries and 65 % of major injuries in the first half of 2023.
” MOM did not wait to prosecute those responsible for the wrongdoing and takes accidental employers seriously who endanger the lives of people.”
