China set for abrupt switch from warm to freezing weather in year of extremes

BEIJING: After summer, temperatures in northern China are expected to drop by up to 20 degrees Celsius, extending a year-long trend of unusual weather swings, according to state forecasters on Friday( Nov 3 ).

According to the National Meteorological Administration( CMA ), a stream of cold air that will enter China on Saturday from the northwest will combine with another that had already arrived on Thursday to cause an abrupt drop in temperatures.

The northern Inner Mongolia region’s small towns, deserts, and grasslands could experience temperature drops of up to 10 degrees Celsius on Friday and an additional 10 ° C on Saturday. In the arid north of China, Xinjiang may be hit by storms.

According to CMA, starting next year, the majority of the east is anticipated to experience normal maximum temperatures drop to the single digits or even below freezing as warm air masses shift east and south, marking an abrupt reversal of new” great warming.”

The immediate change is strange and was caused by the unusually warm weather that was recorded from late October to first November, even though cold and chilling temperatures in these areas are not uncommon for the time of year.
