Following his arrest on Tuesday for alleged bribery in Uthai Thani state, Deputy Interior Minister Chada Thaised ordered his son-in-law to retire from his place as provincial governor.
Weerachart Rasamee, his son-in-law, called Mr. Chada on Wednesday and apologized on Tuesday evening after being released on bail.
Next, so that the community could choose a new mayor, he had given his son-in-law the order to retire. Mr. Weerachart announced his resignation at the legislature on Tuesday at 11 p.m.
Mr. Weerachart, 45, served as the president of the Thap Than region of Uthai Thani’s Talukdoo municipality. On Tuesday morning, he and four alleged accomplices were detained in the city on suspicion of extorting 600,000 ringgit from a contractor for tap water.
The situation garnered media attention because Mr. Chada had been given the responsibility by the interior minister to oversee the repression of powerful individuals across the country.
He stated on Wednesday that he had given Mr. Weerachart the go-ahead to step down from his position as president and did not want to just have his son-in-law suspended while the case was being heard in court.
According to Mr. Chada, his suspension would only make it more difficult to provide public services in the metropolitan area.
Individuals deserved to have the chance to choose a new president, he claimed.
