OTTAWA: The American government announced on Monday, October 23, that it had discovered a China-related” Spamouflage” campaign in which machines posted false information and advertising on the social media accounts of lawmakers, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The Spamouflage plan, which targeted dozens of MPs from across the political spectrum, took place in August and September and used systems of fresh and hijacked social media accounts to publish mass emails, according to a statement from the foreign government.
Deepfake videos, claims that Hawaiian wildfires were started by a covert US war” weather weapon ,” and accusations of legal and ethical violations were all included in the messages.
The state collaborated with the systems to remove the app networks after thousands of like English and French comments were posted on MPs’ Facebook and X accounts.
According to a report from the foreign ministry about the affair,” this promotion could prevent and make it difficult for MPs to carry out their duties and perhaps persuade M.P.s and diaspora communities in Canada from speaking out on issues which concern them.”
Relations between China and Canada deteriorated in late 2018 after American authorities detained a Chinese telecommunications executive. Two Canadians were detained by Beijing immediately after on suspicion of espionage. Since then, all three have been made public.
Ottawa has also charged Beijing with trying to meddle in its internal affairs through a number of tactics, including the target of legislators and improper police stations. All of these accusations have been categorically refuted by China.
The Trudeau administration announced an impartial open investigation into claims of attempted international interference by China, Russia, and others in September.
