Late Finnish president’s belief that ‘every conflict could be solved’ especially relevant today: PM Lee

SINGAPORE: Martti Ahtisaari, the former president of Finland, passed away last Monday( Oct 16 ) at the age of 86. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has paid tribute to him. & nbsp,

PM Lee expressed his condolences to Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in a letter dated October 20.” I was profoundly saddened to learn of the moving.” On October 23, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore made the letter people.

Mr. Ahtisaari, the first president of Finland to be elected by the people,” led Finland through some of its toughest days and to Finland’s access to the EU ,” according to a letter from Mrs. Lee.

Mr & nbsp, Ahtisaari, was known for brokering peace in conflict zones in Kosovo, Indonesia, and Northern Ireland. He served as Finland’s 10th president from 1994 to 2000.

A three-decade conflict in which an estimated 15, 000 people perished was ended in 2005 when the Indonesian government and Free Aceh & nbsp Movement ( GAM ) rebels were reconciled under the supervision of the former UN diplomat.
