Indonesia court rejects moves to change eligibility rules for president, VP candidates

Petitions to reduce the minimum time from 40 to 35 and to help anyone with civil support experience to run for president and vice president were rejected by Chief Justice Anwar Usman, the president’s brother-in-law and head of a panel of nine judges.

The judges ruled that lawmakers should set the age restriction and that the request lacked” reasoning according to law.”

If approved, the prayer would have given the governor of Surakarta and the son of the president, Gibran Rakabuming, permission to run for office in the February election, most plausible as Prabowo’s running mate.

A request for comment was made, but Gibran did not respond right away.

Last year, Jokowi, as the president is well-known, dismissed a query about mounting opposition to his political dynasty, arguing that the people should be free to choose their own leaders.

Between October 19 and October 25, political individuals and their running companions are expected to officially register with the elections commission.
