JAKARTA: A fortnight after resigning from his position, an Indian former state secretary has been named as a suspect in an investigation into corruption and charged with pocketing more than US$ 800,000 in public funds.
Syahrul Yasin Limpo, who until recently served as the crops ministry’s leader, is the fifth secretary under investigation for corruption since President Joko Widoo took company in 2014.
In the vast island nation, where politicians are regarded as among the most corrupt, bone is still pervasive.
Johanis Tanak, deputy chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission( KPK ), stated at a press conference late on Wednesday( Oct 11 ) that Limpo routinely collected” illegal levies from civil servants at the agricultural ministry to pay for his and his core family’s personal needs.”
The politician was charged with forcing government representatives to give him money from the state treasury every month, totaling 13.9 billion dirhams( US$ 885, 000 ), and using the money to pay for a luxury car’s credit card bills and installments.
