A Canadian politician has called for cooperation between the two nations to overcome Beijing’s foreign interference in a unique testimony before US legislators.
Michael Chong is said to have been the target of China’s criticism of its human rights history.
A US Parliamentary council tasked with keeping an eye on China invited him to share his experience with them.
He claimed that Canada is in” major, national threat” as a result of Beijing’s actions.
Mr. Chong told the bipartisan commission on Monday,” My experience is but one case of Beijing’s meddling in Canada.” ” Some, some other cases go unreported and unnoticed, and the survivors suffer in silence.”
Canada claimed earlier this year that China was using the well-known messaging apps WeChat to target Mr. Chong in a propaganda strategy.
According to Mr. Chong, American knowledge also revealed that Beijing had been gathering data on him and his family in Hong Kong for the previous three years. Mr. Chong introduced a movement in parliament in 2021 that labeled China’s treatment of the Uyghur minority inhabitants as genocide.
China has repeatedly denied any attempt to meddle in American affairs or intimidate Mr. Chong.
The Liberal politician went into more detail about how he claimed China had been seen interfering with his nation in his testimony.
He asserted that this includes enlisting Chinese international students at Canadian universities, who are then forced to spy on other students and activists Beijing perceives as being hostile to the Communist Party of China( CPC ).
China has denied operating police stations abroad, referring to them as” company centers” for its citizens.
Mr. Chong claimed that he had cut off contact with his home in Hong Kong” out of an abundance of caution” to ensure their safety as the goal of alleged harassment.
He remarked,” Many, some different people have taken the same action.” One of the effects of ( China’s ) transnational repression is this.
Mr. Chong requested that the US and Canada collaborate on this matter.
In order to” preserve our fundamental freedoms, democratic institutions, and the rules-based international order ,” he claimed, this could be accomplished through the sharing of intelligence and publicizing China’s interference attempts.
Mr. Chong’s evidence was praised by Democratic and Republican US politicians on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.
Democrat Senator Jeff Merkley stated that” we have witnessed continuous targeting of young protesters who have spoken out against the extremely oppressive problems in Hong Kong and we have seen unending force that continues to be directed at Uyghurs around the world.”
The payment, which was founded in 2000, monitors a list of individuals who have disappeared or been taken as political prisoners in China as well as China’s purported intimidation tactics.
Relations between Canada and China have recently deteriorated as a result of the alleged harassment attempts against Mr. Chong becoming common.
In May, Canada decided to remove a Foreign minister due to the problem. The French minister was therefore ordered to leave China’s Shanghai Consulate in retaliation.
Beijing allegedly attempted to meddle in the 2019 and 2021 national elections, according to intelligence organizations.
Canada started a public investigation into foreign intervention by China and other nations next year.
