The controversial subject of the war in Ukraine was brought up in a joint announcement at the G20 summit, but it was universally adopted. Following India’s success in negotiating a discussion on the agreement as G20 president, some world leaders had praised Mr. Modi on Sunday.
Mr. Biden claimed that he had” large discussions” about maintaining the US-India marriage with Modi.
He continued,” And, as I often do, I brought up the crucial topic of respecting human rights as well as how civil society and the free click play a crucial part in helping Mr. Modi create an economically strong and prosperous nation.”
Critics claim that since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ), led by Mr. Modi, came to power in 2014, attacks on minorities, particularly Muslims, have increased. This has been denied by his state. India’s position has dropped 11 places from last year to 161 in the most recent World Press Freedom index, which was released in May by Reporters Without Borders( RSF ).
Campaigners and rights activists have frequently urged American leaders, such as Mr. Biden, to bring up these problems with President Modi. However, experts predict that the US will exercise caution because India is seen as a important ally in efforts to halt China’s rise.
Mr. Biden also discussed the India, Middle East, and Europe financial corridor deal in Hanoi, which was announced during the height and was referred to as a” ground-breaking partnership.”
Analysts view the hall as a challenge to China’s Belt and Road initiative because it aims to connect Middle Eastern nations by rail and by port to India.
On Friday, Mr. Biden traveled to India for the G20 tip. Following his arrival, he and Mr. Modi had diplomatic discussions, which were then followed by a meal at the latter’s official residence.
Since becoming prime minister, Mr. Modi hasn’t held a press conference by himself, and afterward, neither the officials nor the media were invited for questions.
India’s statement released following the meeting stated that the two officials had agreed to work together on a number of problems but made no mention of their discussion of human rights.
