In retaliation for Facebook’s inability to stop the proliferation of fraud ads, the new secretary of digital economy and society has withdrawn the threat made by his predecessor to restrict Thai access to the social network.

According to Prasert Chanthararuangthong, restricting Facebook exposure in the nation would have a significant negative impact on 45 million regular Facebook users as well as thousands of business owners who rely on the social network.

Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, Mr. Prasert’s president, declared last month that he would ask for a court order to restrict access to Facebook because his requests for it to take down dishonest adverts had gone unanswered.

Thais were suffering greatly from Facebook-based scams, according to Mr. Chaiwut, a deputy head of the coalition-member Palang Pracharath Party.

Mr. Prasert, who is also the coalition’s secretary general and the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, stated that he would bargain with Facebook managers in Singapore and Thailand to stop fraudulent advertisements.

He acknowledged the problem of schemes and stated that he would establish a specific center to combat them in three months. According to Mr. Prasert, the center would use artificial intelligence ( AI ) to identify unusual financial transactions.

Mr. Chaiwut complained last month that Facebook had not been able to detect fraud using scammers’ sponsored websites, despite long-standing requests for assistance from the government and related organizations.

According to him, about 70 % of all website investment schemes that occur in Thailand start on Facebook.

According to Prae Dumrongmongcolgul, region director for Meta, Facebook’s family, the business used AI to spot false advertising and removed them as soon as they were found.

However, she continued,” Scammers are constantly evolving, and Facebook techniques occasionally need time to catch up with them.”
