3 people jailed over 3 cases of workplace deaths, including a drowning incident at fish farm

SINGAPORE: Three cases of work fatalities resulted in prison sentences for the business director of a fish farm, the forklift operator, and the crane operator.

According to the Ministry of Manpower( MOM) in an August report on prosecution cases released on Thursday( Sep 7 ), all three were & nbsp and were being prosecuted under the Workplace Safety and Health ( WSH ) Act.

CRANE MISTAKE

One of them, a wharf hoist operator, was sentenced to seven months in prison on August 25 for violating safe work practices and killing another coworker.

Mohammad Asraf Rosli, a PSA Corporation employee and waterfront crane operator, was operating one on March 11, 2020, when he lowered Varathan Prabu’s 20-foot joint pot onto him.

When the incident occurred, Varathan and another colleague & nbsp were securing containers on a ship. After being taken to the hospital, Varathan passed away from his wounds.

According to MOM’s & nbsp investigations, Asraf lowered the container without making sure that someone was standing beneath it, which was a careless act. & nbsp,

Injury involving FORKLIFT

Another instance involved Asiabuild Construction’s certified crane controller Alagappan Ganesan, who was given an 18-week prison term on August 15.

On July 7, 2022, he was in charge of a tractor that was being laid out in an expansive parking garage where Kunjappa Makesh and another employer were laying wires.

Kunjappa and the coworker attempted to throw the wires over the tractor to stop it from being run over by it, but they landed on its back.

Kunjappa next ascended to the forklift’s back. However, Ganesan began to turn the machine around, which led to Kunjappa getting caught between a plate and the bandwidth guard of the forklift.

He was taken to the hospital, but his wounds caused his death.

Ganesan was found to have been careless in carrying out his duties as a crane operator, according to MOM’s studies.

Before turning on the equipment, he didn’t check the surroundings or conduct any checks, according to MOM.

Additionally, according to MOM, forklift and waterfront crane operators must exercise caution and be aware of any nearby employees.
