TOKYO: The Japanese foreign ministry said late on Monday( Sep 4 ) that China’s ban on Japanese seafood following the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant was” totally unacceptable.”
Japan responded to China’s notification to the WTO on August 31 regarding its plans to halt Chinese aquatic imports that began last month by stating that it would explain its stances in the appropriate committees and urging China to promptly revoke the decision.
The US ambassador to Japan stated last week that the US had support China’s seafood import ban, and some Chinese officials have indicated that they may do so.
Japan has also asked China to hold discussions about the import ban related to Fukushima based on the provisions of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership ( RCEP ) trade pact, according to a separate statement released on Monday by Tokyo’s foreign ministry.
According to the statement,” Japan hopes that China will carry the conversations with the Chinese side as soon as is practical and examine its measures in accordance with its responsibilities under the RCEP Agreement.”
